Ignore words that ignore you

We live in a noisy world. It could be noise from people, the internet, or even internally in our heads. In the midst of the noise, it's easy to get diverted by words that have no space in our lives. These are words, after all, that in the grand scheme of things don't help us, guide us, and even improve our lives. They only exist to pull you out of focus, goals, and inner peace. So learn to ignore the words that ignore you.

What are "Words That Ignore You"?

Words that ignore you are statements or opinions that do not agree with your truth, purpose, or goals. It may have been unsolicited advice, unforgiving criticism from those who do not understand the nature of your journey or noise that occupies your mental space. Usually, these words brush over your values or vision. The bad news is that we may give too much importance to it, letting these words fashion our decisions and self-worth.

Examples:

Unconstructive Criticism: comments intended to rip you down rather than build you up.

Unsolicited Opinions: people who do not even know your personal or professional objectives but still feel they have a right to express their opinion.

Words of negativity: words that point and project other people’s insecurity on you, without intent of lifting you up or empowering you.

Why You Should Ignore Them

If you let every word that passes by cling to you, your mental space becomes cluttered with other people’s noise. We internalize words we shouldn’t and dictate our thoughts, feelings, and actions. When you ignore words that do not acknowledge you, you’re reclaiming mental energy and orienting it toward things that really matter.
Here are a few reasons to ignore such words:

1. They Take You Away from Your Mission:

If you are continuously adjusting yourselves according to what people say, you would lose your own way in life.

2. They Leach Your Energy:

You waste precious energy for the time spent breaking down and then responding to something that shouldn’t burden you.

3. They Define You:

Words stemming from ignorance or misunderstanding do not define who you are nor your worth.

How to Filter Out the Noise

1. Know Your Core Values

Begin with knowing your core values. If you know what is truly important to you, you'll know straight off whether a comment or opinion doesn't fit the bill. You ask yourself: Does this word, statement, or opinion add value to my life? If it doesn't, let it go.

2. Practice Selective Hearing

You don't need to internalize every word that falls onto your ears. You start practicing selective hearing by giving attention only to words which help bring you growth. Constructive feedback, meaningful conversations you can really use-most of the 'pleasant' noises would just fade into the background.

3. Build a Mental Filter

Develop a mental filter that helps you distinguish words that matter from those who do not. Whenever something is said, size its importance before responding. Does this person have expertise in that area? Do his or her words align to my goals? Dismiss if so.

4. Detach from Negative Comments

We tend to react emotionally to the negative words, which would sway our mood and perspective about things. Remember: not all opinions deserve a reaction. Practice detachment by acknowledging the comment and consciously choosing not to engage with it.

5. Surround Yourself with Positive Voices

Whom you hang around will significantly affect the words received in your brain. So surround yourself with people who uplift and energize you. Through the positive voices, your self is reinstated, kept on the path toward your goals, and makes the separation of noise simpler.

Conclusion: Focus on What Moves You Forward

Among all the rushing noises of the world, it is very important to have your eyes focused on words that push you forward rather than those that pull you back. Ignore words that will ignore you so as to free the burdens of the unnecessary weight that takes you nowhere. In such a case, people need to remember that time and energy are precious, and throwing them out on insignificant words is not worth the attention.

Decide to listen only for inspiring words, educative words, and words that lift you up. Let the rest fade into the background where they belong.
