In the course of life, sometimes the noise of things fades out. Friends move away, pressures pile up, and the world outside doesn’t understand. In such a silence when you are compelled to listen to your thoughts is when the most powerful revelation is likely to surface: in the end, all that you really have is you.

This is not about some sad, lonely ending and certainly not about remoteness. Instead, it is a strength in self, as it also reveals the necessary understanding that you are really your best friend, your highest protector, and, finally, the creator of the life that is yours.

The Myth of External Dependence

From the very earliest stages of life, we are conditioned to be dependent on others; the parents provide for, care for, and nurture us; teachers lead and instruct us; friends give us a sense of belonging. Society speaks repeatedly that we will be happy if our bonds develop just right, if we get the right kind of attention from others, and if we are economically successful. It can get lost in the idea that all these define worth.
