Why do I feel sleepy before Exam?

1. Stress and Mental Fatigue

Exams can cause a lot of stress, and mental stress causes fatigue. When your brain is worrying whole time about exam, it can feel overwhelmed, anxious and exhausted, causing sleepiness as a response.

Solution:
Try practicing mindfulness or meditate to calm your mind. Short, deep-breathing exercises can help you reduce stress and feel more focused.

2. Lack of Sleep

Many students study till late night. This lack of sleep doesn’t help your brain to be energetic, making you feel tired and sleepy before the exam.

Solution:
Getting enough sleep should be your priority. Aim for at least 7–8 hours of sleep each night before exam. A well-rested brain performs better then whole night awake brain.

3. Poor Nutrition and Hydration

If you’re not fueling your body properly with balanced meals, your energy levels can go down. Dehydration is the reason of fatigue, making you feel more tired and sleepy.

Solution:
Eat a healthy, balanced meal before your exam that includes carbohydrates (like whole grains), proteins, and healthy fats. Also, drink enough water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

4. Lack of Physical Activity

If you’ve been sitting at one place for long period of time while studying, your body can become inactive, making you feel tired and sleepy before the exam.

Solution:
Try doing some physical activity, like a 10–15 minute walk or a quick stretch, before your exam. Exercise creates a flow of blood within your brain, which brings you to a conscious state.

5. Overload of Information

Absorbing a lot of information in a short amount of time can overload or drain your brain. Your brain might feel sleepy in order to escape the mental exhaustion.

Solution:
Break your lessons into small tasks over time, and study techniques like active learning this includes summarizing or teaching to others. This helps you absorbing information better without feeling overwhelmed.

6. Comfort and Environment

Studying or waiting in a cozy, warm environment can knock you off into sleep, if tired or under stress.

Solution:
Alter your study environment to make it cooler and brighter. A bright room and clean fresh air are sure keepers of wakefulness and alertness.

7. Monotonous Study Sessions

If you concentrate on the same thing for a long period without taking breaks, your brain gets drowsy due to lack of concentration. The repetition makes the brain slow down.

Divide your study time into 25–30 minutes, with five minutes of rest between (Pomodoro technique). This keeps your brain active and refreshed.

8. Pre-Exam Anxiety

You’ll get nervous at sitting for the examination, and that tension sets off stress response. Stress gives you a crash landing on your energy levels.

Relax before the test by engaging in relaxation techniques such as visualization or even progressive muscle relaxation. Just let yourself know that the pressure will melt away when you feel prepared.

9. Sugar and Caffeine Crash

These are short-time energizers that give you a crash that’s more exhausting than the energy received.

Solution:
Saying goodbye to your favorite sugary snacks or caffeine. Use nuts, fruits, or yogurt for your much-needed snacks. If you really cannot live without coffee, take half cup only to avoid experiencing this crash and drink more water.

10. Natural Response to Concentration

Extremely focused concentration requires much energy from your brain. Such burnout in concentrating tends to create mental fatigue, and thereby, you sleep just before the exam as your brain tries to recover from this burnout.

Solution
Make sure to have mental breaks while studying to avoid concentration burnout. Now, light activities or listening to happy music can be done during breaks in order to refresh up the brain.
